WeWaterSri Lanka's tanks from open Earth observation
How to read this site
Colour is how full a tank is — against the most water it has been seen holding since 2015: red near empty, sand about half, blue near full. Not litres, not a share of its design capacity, and not comparable between tanks.
Hollow — not seen that month. Not empty, not zero.
Dotted violet — found by the detector, its radar record not yet measured. A tank without a record, not a missing one.
Departure — red is drier than this tank's usual for the time of year, blue wetter.
How far to trust a number — the beside a label says how it was made, how far it has been checked, and what it must not be read as.
Water year — October to September, named by the October it starts in. Maha is the monsoon season, Yala the irrigated one. The by water year and over the record modes, and the tank's Seasons, Health and Effectiveness cards, are read through their : each says what it must not be read as.
Withheld — a number this project can already show is wrong is not drawn. The page says so and gives the reason where the number was (F-67).
Sign in to follow a tank: a list in the corner of the map, and a line on each followed tank saying what changed since you last looked.
Everything here is from satellites, as of the build date, never live: not a survey, not a forecast, not an alert. The map opens on the latest month with looks.
Ameasured — observed with an established method and checked against independent data.
Bmodelled — derived through an assumption, plausible, not independently validated here.
Cindicative — a proxy for ranking and anomaly spotting, never an absolute statement.
red → sand → blue — empty → half → full; red is always the poor end of a scale, blue or green the good one.
hollow — not observed. Not empty, not zero, not normal.
a break in a line — a gap in the archive, drawn as one.

opens the tier, the unit, and what a number must not be read as.
withheld — the quality gate (F-67) found the evidence contradicts this number, so it is not drawn and the reason stands in its place; the tank is hollow and dashed on the map. Two further rules only caution: a sparse series and a record built largely from wind-roughened passes are true findings about the sampling, not about the tank, so they print beside the number rather than replacing it. The chase list is on Evidence.
Developer mode — the workbench (ADR-0042): the candidates layer, the full sixteen-cell record, the level, DSWx, NDCI and ring charts, hide flagged, the shoreline window, the CSV and the Evidence view. The developer chip in the header switches to the visitor's page and back; dev=1 in the address opens it anywhere. Hidden, not secured — the data is public either way.
